Tempest V2

One Level Up

The 2021/22 Tempest V2, available in both membrane and film versions, is unflinchingly driven by the success of the Machine M8. A higher aspect outline, and revised twist layout, balance the shorter, more comfortable boom length. The taller, leaner planform gives the sail a lighter more direct feel where small rider adjustments translate to fast-twitch reactivity. The new outline boasts a measurably reduced swing weight, particularly noticeable during jibes and trim adjustments. This sail exceeds expectations for the aggressive free-racer and shines as a cross-over on a performance foil. The Tempest range has an impressive legacy, yet there is no question our latest takes the best and pushes it one level up.

Based on our experiences with the M8, it was clear that we wanted to develop a higher aspect Tempest. At the same time, we wanted to remain true to the essence of the Tempest, and the performance characteristics that have set such a high benchmark. The new outlines, particularly on the larger sizes, make these remarkable sails more manageable at the top end, with even better handling. Take a mid-width sock, a 3 cam layout, a shorter boom, and our fined-tuned luff curves and the result is truly amazing.

Membrane Technology

We started with our own exclusive, ultra-light membrane construction. Proven, copied and ranked, our membrane is engineered to distribute loads evenly and appropriately throughout the sail skin in a way that traditional paneled sails cannot replicate. We call this Smart Load Technology; fiber and strength where you need it, weight savings where you don’t.

Features

– Seven Battens. With a deduction in battens, this new skeleton is lighter, easier to rotate, and more agile.

No Sock Center Seam. Our single piece leading edge sock panel with no center sock seam reduces turbulence and adds durability.

Flow aligned Battens. The new Streamlined Design features a fanned batten layout. This new batten layout reduces drag and increases acceleration, while maintaining the stability of a more traditional cross batten position.

Twist Dynamics. Each sails size has an upgrade the overall twist profile. The scooped twist flow works in harmony with the skeleton to give the sails and easy breathing feel over a tremendous wind range.

Foot Batten Particulars. To improve rotation of the sail, foot cup has been slightly reduced to allow easier sail body rotation. Rather than kicked up, the foot and cross batten angles remain standard. Keeping this orientation, slightly more perpendicular to the foot edge, adds stability and reduces foot perimeter bounce in chop.

Head Loading. Improved string mapping keeps the sail head under constant load ensuring the twist and drive of the sail is always under control and in place.

High Aspect. New higher aspect ratio reduces back hand pressure, making the sail the perfect candidate for high end foil racing

New Monofilm Version

The Tempest V2 is now also being offered in traditional monofilm construction.

Utilizing first class extruded dyed films, which seriously reduced UV fatigue, the sail top features a 4mil white monofilm whilst the foot is made from a stronger BLACK Xply film.

All the high-end features and finishing details from the membrane version are all carried though to the monofilm sail, setting a new standard for traditional sail building.

Details such as integrated overlapping batten pockets, single piece luff sleeve, G10 Clew Plate combined with the Quick Loc pulley system rates this sail higher than its direct competitors.

How to differentiate the two versions:

Traditional

Avanti’s polyester film sails, both monofilm and Xply, are built to exacting standards.  Polyester films have dominated the windsurfing market for over 25 years for good reason.  Extremely cost effective products can be built from these readily available roll-good materials.  While these offerings represent our mid-range products, we have poured our deep knowledge into developing the best iterations possible.  While the feeling, response, and durability lag behind our modern membranes, we have done everything possible to deliver the best of the genre.  These sails shine when held up to our competitors.

Membrane.

Avanti laminated load-path membranes differentiate themselves with increased durability, weight savings, and superior performance.  These sail skins are unparalleled in the market today.  Each panel is custom engineered to align high-end Aramid fibers along primary load patterns.  Nobody does this better.  Where polyester film sails tend to stretch when powered, our aramid membranes carry loads from corner to corner, radically reducing distortion under load.  Saving weight and limiting stretch are key to maintaining sail performance over a wider wind spectrum.  The result is pure performance which one feels immediately on the water.
